I am not the best English teacher, but I am always working at improving. Some students I see for 45 minutes once every few weeks. Our job is very different than if I was meeting my students more often and in smaller groups. In my mind, our primary goal as native English teachers should be:
- Motivating students to learn on their own.
- If they are already motivated then interact with students in and OUT of the classroom.
In smaller cities/towns you could be the first contact with a foreigner they have ever had. Please do not stay locked away in the office, glued to your computer screen when you aren’t teaching.
What I Do
On average, four out of the five lunch days I either play basketball with students. If I am not playing sports with students I walk around and talk with them. Interacting with students is fun most of the time. Some students who do not participate in the class started speaking with me outside of class. Some are now vocal in class. When teaching conversational activities it is extremely important your students are comfortable with you.
What You Should Do
Use your interests and likes to connect with students. I like sports. If you like music then find a way to play music with students who have similar interests. Keep it simple. As time goes you can open yourself to brand new experiences that you can share together.
